Unraid 7.10 Beta Features
Speaker 1Yeah, I've got a little bit of some type of energy drink in my lovely Unraid glass here. That looks nice. So, anyway, coming up today, we're going to be diving into talking about the Unraid 7.10 beta, some eye candy on dashboards, a bit of GPU madness, some new self-hosting tools, and I'm going to talk a little bit about micro usb devices, for some weird reason as well. Anyway, today's episode is absolutely stacked. So, anyway, shall we move on and start talking about, I think, the new release of unraid seven yeah, uh, didn't the beta 3 just drop like the beta 3 did.
Speaker 1I just installed it this morning actually, okay, yeah um, I think the biggest thing in there.
Speaker 1Well, how can I say the biggest thing I did? I just installed it this morning actually. Okay, yeah, I think the biggest thing in there. Well, how can I say the biggest thing? There's kind of three biggest things really. But I think what a lot of people will really like is the Wi-Fi support, because anyone who's setting up a server and they may be kind of in rental accommodation and there's no wired LAN and you don't want to run a huge cable from one room to another it's going to allow you to run your server and just collect, connect it to your wi-fi.
Speaker 2I'm going to try and share my screen and just show you guys what that looks like and it actually makes sense for once, because with the advent of like wi-fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7, you know we can still push, you know, like over gigabit speeds with Wi-Fi 6 and over gigabit speeds with Wi-Fi 7, especially if you're on that 6 gigahertz band.
Speaker 1And you know, if you're running a media server and you're just streaming things like Jellyfin NB or Plex, it's going to be absolutely perfect for that as well. You think a lot of us, you know, we're already using Wi-Fi clients, like an NVIDIA Shield, apple TV, and they're all Wi-Fi. So I think it's going to work really, really well. Now you can see, here we've got various different. You know these are my two wired interfaces, but here's the Wi-Fi and you can see here I'm connected to my wi-fi here galactica and here are my other networks in the local area and if I click onto info here, we can see here here's all the specs, my ip address etc. Now I don't actually have a wi-fi card for this server, but what I did is I just plugged in this here. I've just actually pulled out the service.
Speaker 1I've probably probably doesn't really like that, but it's just a USB stick I probably had for 10 years just plugged it in and work straight out the box, so really awesome. You know it's pretty cool. If I ever wanted to take a small server away, visiting family or something, I could bring it down and connect it to their Wi-Fi and use it locally.
Speaker 2Yeah, it definitely gives you a lot more flexibility for whatever use case.
Speaker 1Sharing less. And another big feature, Stefano, I think your favorite feature is foreign ZFS pools. Yeah, that's definitely one of them.

I didn't even realize that wasn't a thing. I thought you could just already do that. So when they made that announcement I was like wait, what I was like, this is awesome.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, so we can import. Take a Zpool out of something like TrueNAS and just import it natively into the Android server. Just put it in, select all of the disks, set it to auto, start it up. It will import those drives. So if you want to switch platforms, it's very, very easy.
Speaker 2That's definitely really cool.

Speaker 2The QXL stuff, I think is also really interesting as well. The fact that you can just have one graphics card now be used by multiple VMs is so cool.
Speaker 1VerXL is it called?
Speaker 2I'm sorry, VerGL Sorry, VerGL.
Speaker 1Yeah, that's super cool. So basically we're able to split up your GPU. I think it's only AMD and Intel currently, correct?
Speaker 2Yep, right now, and you know, typical NVIDIA can't do anything right? Yeah, I know it's not a good year for NVIDIA.
Speaker 1And, you know, still no proper Linux drivers for the 5000 series. I'll moan about that a bit later on, though Let me just check the chat in case people are talking to us. So I want to just say to everyone there is about a 10 second delay from when you type to when we'll actually receive it. So if we're not answering straight away, we're not actually being rude and ignoring you. It's just that we probably haven't actually seen that as yet. Well, stefano is, I'm not, stefano is the rude one. It's not rude, it's honesty.
Speaker 2Does anyone happen to use QXL or Spice really instead of over VNC? Do you use Spice over?
Speaker 1VNC Ed. Can someone just oh, I don't use Spice, sorry, I was just getting a bit confused with the live stream there.
Dashboards: Homepage vs Dashy
Speaker 1Oh really, A bit of a delay. Personally, I don't use Spice, to be honest, and I don't use WebVNC. I personally use something like RDP. I'm a big fan of something called Splashtop Desktop. I've been using it for absolutely years. I really like it because they've got a personal version where it's free on your own local network and it also does gpu acceleration if you've got like an nvidia graphics card. So it's really really good quality. It's got sound as well and a little tip for people is sorry. A little tip for people is if you use it over tail scale, then you can actually use it remotely without having to pay the huge fee of I think it's only 16.99 anyway for the license to use it remotely um, for the personal version.
Speaker 2But it's a really really easy way to actually connect to different devices you just have a list of the ones spice should do a 3d acceleration as well yeah, I think it does yeah.
Speaker 2And then with Spice, you know. So if you have like a Mac I think on Mac you have to have like in Homebrew you do have to download something so you can connect to Spice. But otherwise it's mostly ubiquitous, maybe even more so than VNC is. And that's why I was curious, because I've been, I use Spice when I can and I love it because it's got USB redirection and all that stuff. I have used Splashtop a little bit, but I think I definitely like Spice more so because it's all locally controlled and hosted right.
Speaker 1Yeah, I've always found Spice when I try it out. It kind of doesn't go well to full screen for me when I try and use it.
Speaker 2I don't know why, really that's strange. Might be something I'm doing a bit wrong no, no way, you no way, never, never once now another cool thing in unraid in the new unraid is um multi-monitor qxl yeah, that's something.
Speaker 1Is that something you've tried? I?
Speaker 2haven't tried it yeah, no, I haven't tried it. I guess I'm like strange because I don't do vms anymore, like I'm just 100 containers. I don't even have the vm enabled in my unraid a configuration. But you know if if I were going to for any reason, that would definitely be something I would check out because, like you know, like a lot of systems are limited to 560x1440. And in some cases, especially with VNC, it's hard to go to resolutions beyond 3840x1440. But if you have.
Speaker 2QXL. In theory you can do that now, because you just make them split screens or two different screens.
Speaker 1Yeah, and I've got a super widescreen monitor, 49 inches wide. It'd be really nice to be able to actually have dual monitors on the VM and just put them side by side, so it's like 27 inch either side and it will fill up the whole monitor. So I think that'll be pretty cool. Just wondering anyone in the audience have you actually tried out any of the new features, such as Wi-Fi or the virtual GPUs or the new QXL? Anyway, there's going to be a bit of a delay, so I'll see if anyone is doing that currently.
Speaker 2So you said you've tried the new dashboard.
Speaker 1Yeah, I know last time I said I don't use dashboards. You know confession time Last month I said I didn't use a dashboard, but I've caved and I've got one set up and I'm quite loving it. A little bit I've only had it set up for a few days and reading a Reddit post. I will try and bring that Reddit post up to show everyone what I'm talking about. Of course, I won't bother bringing up the Reddit post, but a lot of people are talking about dashboards and I actually caved and installed one and I'm quite liking it because I've got multiple servers in the Home Lab.
Speaker 1Being able to actually link things using Tailscale into the dashboard is actually quite a nice little touch. I think I've seen some pictures of people using their dashboards and they look pretty awesome. I'm trying to at the moment put a little background picture on mine. I believe you've got to create a directory in the app data for let me tell you which one I'm using. I've actually forgotten I'm using Homepage. I'm not sure if anyone else out there is using Homepage, but I've been using it for about two or three days and it looks pretty nice and I want to actually add a background image to it to make it look really nice and cool, but you know you're not using dashboards at all, are you, stefano, really?
Speaker 2No, no, I am not, I am looking. So I saw that link. I can't post it in the YouTube chat because I'm not like a mod or anything, but I am looking at that dashboard that you just said that I can't remember the name of, even though I'm looking right at it, but it's not listed Homepage. That looks pretty clean. I like it. So far I haven't seen any dashboards that I don't dislike. I just I don't know, I guess I just don't. I'm not really in Unraid enough to really need a dashboard, I guess.
Speaker 1Yeah, I've always kind of thought I don't need them because I use basically browser browser favorite tabs. But um, yeah, it does look quite nice and you know, I can definitely see. You know why people like it and it's just quite good fun to actually customize things and yeah, yeah, there's definitely a big appeal like that.
Speaker 2I'm looking at dashy right now. That oh yeah, new plays just mentioned, that's like kind of old school. I like that. It's on github here, let me send you. I'm gonna send you a link in chat I'm just gonna share my screen a moment.
Speaker 1So this is what the dashboard looks like on the reddit post, and this is the one I was talking about yeah, that's pretty clean.

Speaker 1It's nice. You know, I like the little icons showing when various services are up, but you can actually have like a semi-transparent mess on the dashboard with an image behind, and that's what I'm gonna try and set up next week, I think do like a star wars background that's a good question, like star wars or star trek. Hey, it'll probably change every week, you know. Maybe I can figure out a way to have it. So the background changes every day based on what?
Speaker 1that'd be cool the only thing I don't like about this is you have to use yaml files to configure everything yeah, yaml is kind of a pain in the arse it is I don't really like yaml very much so you could do a changing background where, like you, start with episode one or the prequels and then go to the originals.

Windows 11 Frustrations
Speaker 2It huge delay between us and YouTube, but that's okay, that's expected. And, speaking of dashboards, there it is. There it is. Yeah, look at that. Yeah, I love the text that they chose to go with on that one. It's really cool.
Speaker 1And I wonder if you upload your own icons or if they're all kind of.
Speaker 2I would assume that you could upload your own icons, because, yeah, I mean I would assume so Much, in the same way that you can do custom icons for your containers, right. So I would guess. But you know, kind of circling back to the beta 3 release, unraid is finally going to have. Well, they're finally testing responsive webpages, and I know for what? Like 10 years now we haven't had responsive webpages. You know, as more and more people are using mobile devices to connect to their servers, it's like, hey, now's the time, don't delay anymore. And it's good to finally see that Unraid's going to support that.
Speaker 1So hopefully, maybe we'll get an app one day. Yeah, it's going to be a game changer when we've got, like you know, know the response to web pages for sure. I personally never really connect to my unraid server through me, neither a mobile device. I might on my tablet sometimes, but I never, I never do on my phone. I can barely read the text on my phone at the best of times.
Speaker 2Yeah, there was there's only like a very rare occasions when I need to do that, and that's like if I'm on, if I'm traveling, and it's like great, my server is not accessible, or something like. Or like like jelly fins are accessible and I need a troubleshoot, or something like that.
Speaker 1Or someone saying my voice is a little low. Yeah, you are a little quiet to be honest, so hopefully that's a little, a little better. I'm sorry, Stefano. What were you saying?
Speaker 2I don't really remember. I know the last thing I said was about responsive webpages and maybe, hopefully, we get an app one day. That'd be really cool. I don't know how an app would work. Do any other applications have an app?
Speaker 1There are some apps that you can get for Unraid that have been around for quite a while. I can't remember off the top of my head what the name is of them, but it wouldn't be as good as a native app from LimeTek that's kind of built in. People have done the best they can to make an app for a mobile device.
Speaker 2I think it may actually be harder to hear you now than before.
Speaker 1Really Give me one moment, tell me if this gets any better. How's that now?
Speaker 2It doesn't sound like it changed. So while Ed plays with that, does anybody else have any other dashboards that you guys use or recommend? I feel like this topic comes up a lot. I see it online on the forums and then on Reddit about people asking for dashboards and things. So if anyone has one, that would be cool, because I think I'm slowly starting to get. I guess that seed's been planted so I'm slowly coming around to the idea of maybe trying out a dashboard, especially maybe on my like my backup server or something I'm always afraid to touch my production server. David uses homepage as well. Yeah, that homepage one's pretty nice Right now. I think I'm a little bit more leaning towards Dashy right now. And then there's so many dashboard options. I don't know how you guys could choose one, but anyway, I'm always a little scared to modify Unraid, especially my main server that I use every day. I'm sure the dashboard won't break anything.
Speaker 1It runs in a Docker container.
Speaker 2It does. I didn't know that.
Speaker 1It's not going to do anything bad at all. It's basically like a web server with links to other things, so you're not going to break anything. It's not a plugin, so if you don't like it, you can just nuke it, delete it and it's gone, the one thing, Hopefully everyone can hear me a bit better now, so I'm really sorry about that everyone sounds good to me, cool, the one thing I wish.
Speaker 2So Timothy just brought this up and I wish that Unraid kind of had it too. So have you ever used Cockpit, like on Fedora? Yeah, I really wish that with Unraid, since you and I have multiple servers. Other, there's tons of people that have multiple servers. Obviously It'd be really cool to have another tab or an option to switch to your other server once they're connected via SSH or something. I know that we technically have that with Unraid Connect, but I think it would be, because I can imagine a situation where there's someone who's totally offline, like they're in the woods or they're traveling or whatever. It would just be really cool to have the ability to keep it all local as well yeah, I'll show you something now.
Speaker 1This is nothing like cockpit, okay. Okay, I'm going to share my screen. What I like to do is, on the unraid dashboard at the top is I have various tabs using the custom tabs and I have them go to other servers and if you use tail scale ips, it will work. It will work with other things as well, and things that are not in your own network. So if you had a server that was outside of your network, it would still work. So I'll just share my screen and show you guys.

Speaker 1I will be on my very best behavior now. So you see at the top here behavior now. So you see at the top here. Yes, if I click on base star okay, you know I'm clicking on the riverside bit. Let's actually click on the real screen, not the actual. I was like I didn't see you click. If I had a brain I would be dangerous it's the nerves.
Speaker 1It's the nerves you see, clicking onto it just brings me kind of straight in, so cool. Yeah, I have reset this server up, so unfortunately it doesn't have the same buttons, but I normally kind of duplicate it, so it's exactly the same. You see all these other servers along the top here. All of these are currently turned off so I can't really show you them, but on every server I have these all identical, so you just click onto whichever one you want and it just goes between each server.
Speaker 2That's pretty high speed. Yeah, that's awesome. It's quite nice. Do you have a video or a thing to show how to set that up? You do right, I think you do.
Speaker 1I did a video on my Space Invader 1 channel. I think I called it Turbocharged Custom.
Speaker 2Tabs. That's what it was. Yeah, I'm going to look into that because I kind of want that for my setup now.
Speaker 1Because what I did on it as well is I made it so. When you click the tab, it runs a custom script that will send a wake on LAN. Let me try and pronounce that properly Wake on LAN.
Speaker 1Yeah, magic packet To a server that's asleep, and so I keep all my servers asleep rather than off, and then so from the dashboard, I can actually click on it and wake other servers up, even when I'm away from home. So I just tail scale into the server that's on 24 7 and then click onto any one of the other servers and it would wake it up through the actual gui.
Speaker 2So I thought that was something that is really cool, like I always I think a magic package or wake on on lands, always like super underappreciated for what you can do with it, like being like you can turn it on. You can turn on your servers with your phone, you can do it locally over the network. I mean that like, and that's existed for decades, but it's a feature that often goes kind of under the radar and then also we'll get left out sometimes on some other boards and it's like just keep it included with your network adapter. There's no reason to exclude it.
Speaker 1And the problem is with wake on LAN and sleep is it is really flaky?
Speaker 2Is it?
Speaker 1really it is what I find sometimes has happened for me in the past. I put a server to sleep and then when you wake it up after sleep, sometimes an HBA card hasn't woken up properly and then the drives will actually drop out of the array. Or one of the drives doesn't wake properly and wake in time, and it is. It's dropped out of the array. So you've got to be quite careful with that. I think if you wrote some kind of script to have, when it wakes, what's it called emtp or whatever to kind of wait a little bit before it starts, I think it's just like the system starts too quickly before the hardware is woken up properly. But it doesn't happen on every server and it happened on one of my servers once before. But also I find sometimes when it wakes from sleep it can just be kind of a bit flaky, but obviously it's quite hardware and motherboard related.
Speaker 2A long time ago, one of my first jobs we had about 20 computers that were stacked on top of each other and we wrote a script to turn them on like one on each side all the way up, because they were like on a stack right and the power supplies were so loud that when they were power on you'd hear like click, click, click, click, click. And so we tried to like adjust it a little bit so that way it would kind of make a tune. But it was really hard to do that, but it was so cool, like we'd come in in the morning, run the script, it'd turn on all the computers and you'd just hear all the clicking noise from the power supplies coming on.
Speaker 1That was so awesome One thing I like doing on my servers I'm a bit of a nerd is I love putting beep speakers in servers. So you know the little kind of thing that goes on the motherboard header with the speaker thing. And I made a container ages and ages ago. I've never made a video about it, but the software is on community applications that will convert an MP3 into beep music, and so what I like to do is, when a script runs on my server, if it fails, I have it play the imperial march do you show me this?
Speaker 1when I came to visit you, I might have done I can't remember because I was like this sounds really familiar yeah, and if a script is, um, if it does well, it does the kind of mario achievement, yeah, and if a script does well, it does the kind of Mario achievement. So you know, when I'm sitting at my desk, if I hear the Imperial March, I think okay, something's gone wrong. What is it? So it's quite nice to have the audible kind of triggers, anyway. So anyway, moving on, there's a lot of talk about a new container called in the ARS series of apps, called Profiler, which is used for managing Sonar and Radar custom formats. So I'm not sure if any of you guys are using that for downloading your DVD collection that you have. I haven't used it myself either, but it seems to be very popular.
Speaker 2Yeah, sonar and Radar themselves are super popular, which I also have never used, but it's good to see that there's still contributions to that and then things to improve the way that I guess those files are downloaded and compiled. So I think what?
GPU Testing: NVIDIA 5070 Ti and AMD 9070 XT
Speaker 1it does is it sorts out various profiles. So what you're searching for you can choose it to be I might be 100% wrong here. Like I said, I don't use it myself One that has like a Dolby Atmos soundtrack or various kind of quality profiles that you want like custom quality. I believe it sorts out and various release groups you might be looking for.
Speaker 2Yeah, because the amount of options you have today are just insane ETS, atmos 5.1, 7.1, you know, hevc 256. So I assume that's what that profile handles.
Speaker 1I was really happy when I got my first Dolby Pro logic system and my kind of Blu-ray. A whole load of friends came around and like had a big 36 inch crt and pro logic, you know. Then it was like you know, I'm dolby digital 5.1. Then they brought it out myself. Now I've got to get more speakers, you know. I just really hope they don't bring out anything else one year later. There's a whole new.
Speaker 2Thing. Next year later another new thing talking about new things.
Speaker 1Do you remember we were talking last time about gpus?
Speaker 2yep, and how?
Speaker 1nvidia is still blowing it yeah, and I told well, last time I was telling you I couldn't get a gpu, I had a couple in the basket and it all went horribly wrong. I went to click pay and didn't get anything. Well, I managed to get a 5070 Ti. I was like really excited and put it in the Unraid server and loaded the latest driver and it doesn't show up.
Speaker 1So I was thinking, why is the card not showing up? You know it would show up in LSPCI, in the system hardware. You'd see it there, but the drivers just weren't showing up for the U50 TI. And I believe the reason for that is because when the OEMs bring out their cards, if I had a Founders Edition I believe it would have actually shown up, but they all have kind of various ID numbers and because it's an OEM and those ID numbers haven't filtered through to the drivers, the card doesn't actually show up. But if you use the open source driver, it does actually show up. But the open source, I don't believe, has CUDA, so then you have to download a CUDA package as well to use it. So I think, okay, I'm going to wait.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Yeah, I'm going to show you something else here. Where is it? I've also got just got. Can you see it? Yeah, I'll put it right back there. I've got myself a 9070.

Speaker 1Basically. I saw a lot of people on the forums having issues passing that through and I thought I really want to try and help get it passed through. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to help someone on the forums and you're thinking this might, that might work, it should work, but you don't really 100% know.
Speaker 1So I thought yeah, I saw that card that actually come down to the actual manufacturer's recommended price, which is really crazy. Just a few weeks ago in the uk those were 900 pounds. I got that this last week and it was, I think, £550. So it was almost like half the price. So it was really really crazy. But did they say? I thought it said puke for a second, what's that?
Speaker 2Oh yeah, yeah, it does Pure.
Speaker 1Yeah, it does, doesn't it man? Yeah?
Speaker 2Good eye.
Speaker 1Yeah, it used to say puke when it was £1,000. Now it says pure, now it's back at the proper price. Yeah, so I'm looking forward to doing some testing with that card, seeing the nuances of pass-through and whether it's got the reset bug etc. So I'll be releasing some videos about those two cards very soon.
Speaker 2And then you could do a video about VirGL, showing that off how that works with AMD.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, definitely. That was actually another reason I got that card.

Speaker 1I told my wife I need it for science. She goes didn't you buy a graphics card the other day? Yeah, yeah, but they're different. I know she's not watching, so she doesn't know how much they cost.

Speaker 1I mean, they're only like what? 1500, I'm sorry, 1500 euros. No, no, no, they're not. They're about 50 pounds. Okay, they're 50 pounds 50 hundred pounds. I'm sorry, I don't understand but yeah, so I've done a bit of testing with the pass-through on the 5070 ti so I wanted to. Well, basically, my brother, he bought the 4070 Ti and he doesn't use Unraid, he just uses Windows.

And I sent him some pictures last night and it was about a thousand points more than his Running on a VM and his CPU is faster than mine. He's got the latest amd cpu. I'm using a 13 900k and obviously didn't pass through all of the cores because, you know, wanted some for unraid to use. I think I was getting what's called, which was a little. I was hoping to get a little bit more because I think, um, the kind of average for the card was um 7200, so there was a little bit of a drop off. But I haven't had a chance. I've not tried to overclock the card. This was the kind of cheapest 9070 XT there is. Maybe the higher scores are better versions of this card Could be.
Speaker 2Maybe they even have custom coolers on them. That's so hard to tell sometimes.
Speaker 1So, yeah, I started installing Windows 10. And sorry, no Windows 11 to make fresh machines. I basically installed the OS and then I copied, copied it after it was installed, so I knew I'd be wanting to use the same with the AMD card. And I remember you told me, Stefano. You said Microsoft had made a build of windows where you have to have a Microsoft account.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Because at the moment, like I'm not sure if people know, you can um, press, I think, shift and f10 and you put in, I think like sort of no bypass or something, and then it reboots and then you don't have to put in your microsoft account. But they've actually got rid of that, I believe, now. Um, now in the new build it wasn't there in the build that I downloaded, but it looks like they're obviously pushing it so you have to have a Microsoft account in order to install Windows 11.
Speaker 2Yeah, so I think that latest build they removed the bypass command, so that way it just doesn't work at all. I think this is.
Speaker 1I just want to know what everyone in the chat thinks about it. Do you actually use a Microsoft account or do you prefer to have a local account with your Windows machines? I really don't like a Microsoft account.
Speaker 2Do you know if the sticky key thing still works to get around, Like if you keep doing sticky keys you can open up a command prompt? Do you know if that still works?
Speaker 1I have no idea. To be honest, I haven't tried Another way. I used to get around it before. I knew the shift and F10 during the install. I would just have a throwaway Microsoft account. That was kind of nothing and I would just install it and then I'd just set up a local account through CLI and then log into that and then delete the Microsoft account.
Media Servers: Plex vs Jellyfin vs Emby
Speaker 2So I got to tell you something that's extremely frustrating for me With Windows 11,. So let's say you're in a professional environment, right, and you want to domain join a clean install of Windows 11, right? You have the option to either use your Microsoft account or create a local account through domain joining. Okay. So if you're domain joining, presumably you're putting this in like a professional environment, right? So Microsoft's like, okay, yeah, you know what username do you want? Well, I'm just going to do like administrator, whatever the administrator account would be called, right. And then it's like okay, what do you want your password to be? So on one page, they ask you for your password, you type it in, and then they bring you to the other, and then you type in the password again, right? Well, if you mistype that password, you have to go back, type the password in again, go forward, type it in again to make it match. All right, not a big deal, right? A little weird design, right? Whatever, not a big deal.
Speaker 2Then you go to the next page and it starts asking you for security questions. I'm sorry, you want me to have security questions for a domain joined system. There are recovery tools in a professional environment. Why are you asking me security questions. So now, if an administrator sets security questions and then he leaves and they don't record them for whatever reason, three questions. Nobody will know what the answers to those questions are. And also they're like what's your mother's maiden name? I'm domain joining this system. My mother has nothing to do with my company that's a really good point.
Speaker 1Why? Why this is you could always do what I do stephano and not use windows. Yeah, well, no that. That. That is a very good, yeah, very good um point. When they asked me those questions, you know, it says you know, what city were you? What was the name of your first pet? I always put dog and it goes what. What city were you born in? I put city. What city did your parents meet in? I put city. So now, if anyone wants to hack my account, there you are there you go, yeah, I do something similar to.
Speaker 2It's always like. And then what's more frustrating is like, since every system's different, you never know if capitalization matters. So I always like do all lowercase, never put spaces. You know, just like, one word, one response. Because, like, security questions don't protect you from anything. The only thing they protect you from is not getting your account back. That's it.
Speaker 1I remember 1, 2, 3 is good Security question like you know what was the name of your first school or something, and I typed it in and my first school it was called Saint, something and I kept typing it in but I wasn't sure how I actually typed it in, if I did a capital for S and then T or I did the whole word Saint.
Speaker 2Yeah, see, that's a dangerous game.
Speaker 1And I just couldn't remember how I'd actually written it down and I think I actually couldn't get back into the account at all.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's all it does is it prevents users who are not 100% tech savvy from getting back into their accounts because they forget what they typed or they type it differently, like maybe they spell out Saint completely the first time and then the next time when they go to try to access their account, they put ST, like it's just, it's so frustrating and then it makes. What doesn't make sense is okay. So Windows has Windows Home Pro Enterprise Editions. Why can't they just behave differently? Why does the Enterprise Edition have to have the Microsoft's Game Store and all the apps, like they should? Each one of those should have different settings according to with who is trying to install Windows. They should stop trying to enforce what they're doing for home users on enterprise users and honestly, at this point, I think Microsoft is just so massive and so disassociated from their own product that things like this will never get fixed and it's going to continue getting worse.

Speaker 1There's something I really like with my Windows installs is I'm not sure if anyone in the chat has heard of something called Talon Debloater. I will try and bring it up and share my screen. But it's basically someone's put together all of the tools that debloat Windows and you don't have to run them individually. It's just one package. You install it and it just makes it look nice. You see a little sort of spinny window and it just strips out everything out of Microsoft.
Speaker 2That's awesome.
Speaker 1That's not necessary, and it says what browser do you want? We recommend Brave, and it installs Brave for you as well, so you just literally run it and that's all you have to do. I found that very, very useful.
Speaker 2I'm always scared of using tools like that because Microsoft, they rename things constantly, they change registry paths constantly, and it's like you finally find that good tool and they're like, oh, we're going to just change the name of this product and its registry association and now it no longer works.
Speaker 1So yeah, it's called Talon Debloater. There is a whole website for it, but this is the GitHub for it. I don't know where the web page is, but Talon Debloater. I recommend people checking it out. It makes Windows much less bloated, kind of gets rid of all of the things that you were talking about, like the kind of games like Candy Crush and all of the you have Microsoft Enterprise or Windows Enterprise, but we're going to install Disney Plus on your operating system, okay, it is pretty crazy, isn't it?
Speaker 1Okay, even just the regular Windows 10 Pro, why put Candy Crush on there? I always remember years ago, candy Crush would just always reappear. It's just that one that just won't go away. I'd install it, put a placeholder for it, then there'll be a Windows update, then there'll be a placeholder for Candy Crush again. I was thinking why.
Speaker 2I honestly think they should just have just Windows 11 and be done with it, because there's no real differences between the versions, as far as I can see anyway.
Speaker 1But talking about the debloaters and them going wrong. That's why you should be running vms on your unraid server. Stephano, get some windows vms, take a snapshot, then try something, and if it doesn't work, you roll back. It's really easy. That's what you're meant to do no one, no one runs windows on bare metal anymore.
Speaker 2Come on dude, I just know I'd rather not things I'd rather do with myself. Go touch grass.
Speaker 1Yeah. So another thing just looping back to GPU talk as well. Just something I want to mention to the community is I recently bought a. I had an N100, which, if you've seen the Uncast episode with the low power server I built which uses about only 20 watts 21 watts currently and I swapped it out for an n150, which has got slightly different igpu now. So if anyone else swaps out and gets a n150, you must have kernel um 6.11 and above. So you will need the beta version of Unraid to get full driver support for the iGPU. But if you're using MB, you will find that transcoding doesn't work because MB haven't updated their FFmpeg to support that iGPU, but Plex and Jellyfin it works fine. So anyone has that issue and you're trying to do transcoding in MB. That's the reason the MB devs say that there is going to be an update very, very soon. In fact it may already be out. I think I checked about two days ago and it wasn't then.

Speaker 1Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating, I'm just I think what it is is like you know, obviously you know developers. They don't have every single piece of hardware there is, so they kind of rely on us guys to say, hey, this isn't working. And then they've got to go back and forth between us and say, can you test this? You know, because you know, unless you're a billionaire, you can't buy every single piece of hardware when it comes out just to test with various bits of software. So I don't think mb is on its way out at all. But what do you think about the plex news, everyone in the chat as well, the fact that the lifetime has gone up and I think you have to have a license now for receiving a stream as well, am I right?
Speaker 2I don't that sounds accurate. I don't really remember because, like I said I left forever ago.
Speaker 1I believe you have to have a license with Plex to actually receive a stream, but that's. But I think if you've got the lifetime pass and you're streaming to family, they don't need to have it. But I think if you just got Plex on its own and you're joining to other things, I think you have to have some kind of license, which is about £60 a month. A lot of people are not very happy with Plex.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't be paying Plex, because they've given us years and years and years of dedicated software updates and they've been, they've been taking care of us. Like we're not saying it's not, not worth it, but it's just. At what point does it become? Like, if you have to pay for now you have to stream to a friend, right, it's? It's just those little slow, those changes slowly taking place and eventually they're like Netflix where it's like, oh, you got to pay $15 per stream to everyone, families no longer included, and they just slowly erode all of the features. Right, we see that happen all the time with everything. Like Netflix used to be like $5 or like, well, $5.99 or whatever. That was a great price. Now it's like what, $34?
Speaker 1What I don't like about Plex is I don't like it how they've got their own tv stuff there I just find that really annoying.
Speaker 1I know everyone tells you oh, you can easily like hide that. You can do this, you can do that. I shouldn't have to. I don't want to do that, I don't want this kind of other things and I also, you know, to be quite honest, I don't like it. How should I put this? There was a lot of chatter a while ago about in plex's what is it terms because they say they don't um share any kind of data about you yeah, so it's really like what you're watching that kind of thing.
Speaker 1I know it was probably 18 months ago. There was a big uproar. I remember reading about it on reddit and other places online that in your plex friends they were they were getting a notification saying kind of like you know like, oh, stefano watched game of thrones last night. Why don't you watch it? I think? Well, hang on, how did you manage to send that email out if you don't know what I'm watching? So yeah, that made me lose trust and that was like I've never used plex, to be honest.
Speaker 2But duck, duck, go was like they're like, oh, you know, privacy, privacy, privacy. And you'd be like, hey, what is my location? And they're like, oh, you're here. It's like, wait, oh, you know, privacy, privacy, privacy. And you'd be like, hey, what is my location? And they're like, oh, you're here. It's like, wait a minute. You said you didn't know this information and then, but I mean, that's not really how it works, but like they were still tracking you even though they were saying they weren't. It's kind of the same thing. It's like you said you weren't doing this. How do you?

Micro-USB in 2025 and Tech Oddities
Speaker 1I use MB. It's actually my media server that I use most of the time. I'm running MB and Jellyfin alongside each other and I am going to be bringing out a video soon for migrating from either MB or Plex into Jellyfin and bringing all your user history and watch history and migrating the database into Jellyfin and bringing all your user history and watch history and migrating the database into Jellyfin so we don't have to lose all of your watch history, et cetera. I wish you had done that.

Speaker 1So have you heard that OpenAI, the makers of ChatGPT, are releasing something called an Open Weight model this summer?
Speaker 2I have heard of it, but I haven't read about it.
Speaker 1I believe an Open Weight is not an open source model. It's kind of like a bit in between, but you can run it locally. They don't have the kind of training data like a full open source version with, but I thought that was quite interesting hearing about that. I was actually quite surprised that they're releasing it, to be honest, but they were originally meant to be fully open source company, hence the word open ar yeah, you know it's really want to buy like another mac mini or mac studio, especially, if you like, if you get like the M3 Ultra right.
Speaker 2You know it's like two chips fused together and you slap that sucker with 512 gigs of RAM and it's unified memory. So you're technically giving your graphics, your graphics, 512 gigs of RAM and that's like so much for.
Speaker 1Wow, that's insane, like it's funny how Apple didn't even think about, accidentally made that like that. Yeah, yeah, the unified memory you get. Yes, that's a really yeah, I'd never, oh, wow, yeah, awesome like because there's no way they had planned originally.
Speaker 2Like oh you know the whole ai thing and unified the h100 cards.
Speaker 1You know the nvidia h100. They've got like 80 gigs of ram but they're 30 000 us. Even a secondhand a100 with 40 gigs you're looking at probably 10 to 15 000 each and I've heard there's a fake problem with those cards. There's a lot of fake nvidia cards like that coming out of china and being sold on places like ebay and things like that. So imagine buying a graphics card for like 15 000 ebay to find out it was fake afterwards. I don't think I could recover from that.

Following any projects, things to watch things like gnome buildroot internet archive open robotics another another cool thing. There's a project called open deep search. I will try and if I can bring this up and share my screen, which is basically like a kind of ai search engine, but open source, and I think that sounds really interesting myself. So this is open deep search right, let's try and pronounce that properly democratizing search with open source reasoning models and reasoning agents. So I think that's really interesting and something I would definitely like to try out. I'm not sure what you guys in the chat if that's something that would interest you. There's always like there's always this something that would interest you.

And xp was just so good that, like I was like, especially after service, after service pack 2, it got great and I was like there's no reason for me to switch to Vista, what's the point? And so I ended up just inadvertently skipping it. And then I was really excited for Windows 7. And Windows 7 was great. Windows 10 ended up being great, even though it started off really bad.

Speaker 1Our paperless Dane Down Under says he installed paperless last week. I'm trying to get all the documents organized. Yeah, that's something I really, really want to install. I installed it for a friend of mine and he now basically can't live without it. It's definitely something I really do need to install. I've got various bits of paper in my office I can see across there that are just crumpled up and I have not put them in a folder yet. So having a digital copy of them would definitely be a good idea.
Speaker 2This kind of reminds me of a little bit like GitLab. This looks awesome. It reminds me a little bit of GitLab and how GitLab is kind of set up. I'm going to check this out. I'm going to look at this on my free time.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's pretty cool. What you can do is you can have like a share on your Unraid server and then you set your scanner to scan to that share and Paperless will look at that and it will import and ingest the document that goes in there. So say, you get a water bill, and then you can. You can search it through text and basically bring up documents. If you type in water, it will bring up the water bills and that kind of thing yeah, because of all the powerful stuff that's really fancy yeah, definitely be looking forward to doing that.
Speaker 1I keep meaning to do it all the time. Ronald here says he's into time, precision and set up a load. Oh, wow, that's really awesome, really awesome. Ronald, it's pretty complex to you. Know how complex is it to set up something like that? I'm assuming you need special hardware. Wow, that's pretty awesome. And to paperless you can add an AI, a local AI, to it as well to make the searches more precise.

Speaker 1So I can like kind of parse through all the tags and build the associations for you and David Smith is saying Ed, you put out a video recent-ish for Nextcloud install which contained all the needed containers. I followed your previous video guides to install all the parts. Yeah, nextcloud all in one. I really like that as a method of choice for installing Nextcloud all-in-one. I really like that it's a method of choice for installing Nextcloud, because it is really what the Nextcloud devs recommend to install it. It just installs all of the containers for you and it also installs board backup as well, so you can just choose another share on your Android server and it will automatically backup everything the database, all of the data, raid server and it will automatically back up everything the database, all of the data. But if you do that, don't put the backup on the same pool or array as what you've got your normal next cloud on. Even if you just put an unassigned disk or just a single drive pool, make sure it's a separate place for your backup. Don't just have it like a nextcloud share on your array and a backup share on the array. If you're going to do that, then specify a specific disk for the backup share, say disk 8 or something, and make sure your normal Nextcloud share excludes disk 8. Then at least your original and backup will be on different disks. That's what I recommend about Nextcloud all in one.
Speaker 1David Smith says should I redo or stay on my current version? Well, if you're talking about Nextcloud, dave, I would say it's very difficult to actually migrate the data from one Nextcloud to another because most of us will have Nextcloud if we haven't used the All-in-One set up with MariaDB. The All-in-One uses Postgres, so it's really difficult to actually bring across the database. But if you're not really worried about just if you've only got a few users, you can migrate their data across, reset up their accounts and then you can run a command from CLI inside of the container to then have Nextcloud, scan the user's folders and it will update the database.
Speaker 1But what you will lose is things like if you've ever shared out a link to someone else from your Nextcloud. Obviously they won't work because the database will be fresh and it will only have the new files in. So that's what you've got to think. But you know I would migrate to it if it isn't going to be a big issue for you to start again really and you don't mind losing the database but not the data and tim saying trialing unraid system is far friendlier than true. Now I cannot get active directory stable. Are there plans to improve it? It is on the roadmap for Active Directory to get improved, so that is something that will be worked on, but I can't say an exact time of when that will be, but it's definitely something that is.
Speaker 2I'd like to see Unraid move away from maybe not deprecate Active Directory, but start using Entra ID or something in the cloud. That'd be really cool.

Speaker 2I think the one change I would make is maybe take away slow mode, because even I have to wait 60 seconds to respond to some people in chat.
Speaker 1The only problem is, you see, I put it in YouTube, you have normal and you have low latency and you have super low latency. So I put it on low latency, which has about a 10 second delay. Okay, like ultra low latency, you has about a 10 second delay. Okay, like ultra low latency, you have about a two second delay. But the problem is is because when it's going, you know the stream's going out to youtube. It has to then convert it to the various different, you know, resolutions like. So what can happen is if someone's got spotty wi-fi or not very fast internet, they can have a lot of buffering on the viewer side. So that's why I thought it best to choose a bit in the middle. Let us know as well was there any buffering for anyone at all with how it was now? Maybe next time we'll try a lower latency and see if anyone has issues actually watching.
