Welcome To The May Digest
Good evening. Welcome to the Unraid May Digest. I'm your host, Stefano Partida. Let's get started. May was an incredibly busy time for the Unraid team. However, we did get Unraid 7.3 stable out of it. We also got things like internal boot, so now we can simply boot our Unraid machines from EMMC, NVMe, or SSDs. We also got two new licensing options, should you choose to use them. One is to use your internal flash for your license. And we can also now anchor or bind our license to the TPM on our motherboard, which makes Unraid a lot more flexible for OEMs. So in theory, we could start seeing more OEMs, provide us the Unraid operating system. Now, just because these new features are available doesn't mean you need to do anything at all. In fact, if your Unraid server is already running happily, you can just do nothing, apply the update anyway, and nothing will change for you at all. If you're a new user looking to set up internal boot for the first time, there is a video for you demonstrating how to perform these actions. Or if you're an existing user looking to migrate to internal boot off of your USB thumb drive, there's also a video available
Unraid 7.3 And Internal Boot
for you as well. The Unraid team weren't the only ones busy out there over the last couple of months. Security researchers were using AI to help find security vulnerabilities across all the Linux distributions that have been there since as early as 2017. All of these discovered security vulnerabilities and bugs have caused teams around the world to work long hours and long shifts just to make sure that all these can be fixed, missing time with their families. And the under team is no exception to this rule. Because of all that, the team gave us 7.3.1, which is focused on security updates, kernel updates, updates for Docker, ZFS, storage, the web UI, and the base lackware distribution packages. There are so many CVEs that have been patched and fixed, we could spend an hour discussing a quarter of them. So I'd recommend visiting the docs or pausing if you're curious about any specific CVE or a fix. And it doesn't even stop there. Anyone who's still out there running Unraid 7.2.4.5.6 like I am,
AI Finds Linux Bugs And 7.3.1
well, it's time to upgrade to Unraid 7.2.7 because it brings us updates to 11 core packages like Nginx, curl, PHP, Libc, Avahi, kernel updates that improve Docker performance and fixes for USB 3.1 on some devices, and another Docker VLAN gateway fix and some smaller web UI and Connect corrections. Just recently on the Ed and Stepheno Unleash show, it was teased that Unraid would be switching away from Flackware into a different operating system. But we don't know what that operating system is at this time. Lots of people online are making speculative assumptions that it could be a Debian-based operating system, maybe a Fedora-based operating system, or maybe even Arch. But nobody really knows at this time, and we don't have any more details than literally what I'm sharing with you now. Now, the goal of switching the operating systems
Why 7.2.x Users Should Upgrade
would really be to facilitate bringing us faster updates and also fixing security or patching the system much more quickly. And then, of course, also hopefully reduce the number of bugs that are in the operating system itself. For the app of the month, we have Open Web UI, which is a self-hosted chat interface for running large language models of your choice. The NVIDIA DGX Spark famously does this as well as Open Web UI is the default interface
Moving Away From Slackware
for these large language models. And if that isn't enough to convince you to check out or learn more about Open Web UI, then maybe the YouTube video that was created will be enough for information for you to consider using it yourself. For community content around the web, we have tons of great videos, like the Unraid 7.31 walkthrough, an internal boot setup guide, the stuff nobody tells you about local AI, and killing ads with PyHole. Parlez-vous français? Then check out Super Bokey's video describing in great detail all the things about internal boot, and it's all in French for anyone out there who actually speaks French natively or at least understands it anyway, unlike myself. Lastly, there's some brand new merch available on the store that you can pick up. That's a nod to a very good space epic that we all know
App Of The Month Open WebUI
and love. Be sure to head over to the new store to at least give the new merch a glance and maybe even consider grabbing some while you're there. And as always, if you enjoy content like this, be sure to like this video and get subscribed for more. Thank you and good night.
