📰 THE BIG NEWS: UNRAID 8

Unraid 8 is migrating from Slackware to a modern, Fedora-based foundation built on Universal Blue's uCore. The goal: faster security updates, broader hardware support out of the box, built-in backups, and native Docker Compose — an immutable, image-based OS you can update atomically and roll back in one step.

August Digest Kickoff

SPEAKER_00 1:00

Welcome to the Unraid August Digest. I'm your host, Stefano Partita, and without any further waiting, let's go ahead and discuss all things that went down in August.

Unraid 8 And The Fedora Move

SPEAKER_00 1:17

We'll go ahead and start with the big news first, and that is Unraid 8 has officially been announced. And what exactly makes Unraid 8 so special? Well, Unraid 8 will be migrating away from Slackware over to Fedora OS. The goal of this is to bring faster security updates, broader hardware support, built-in backups, and Docker Compose will be native as well. To give you some more specifics about what's actually happening here, we'll be using Universal Blue's customized image called UCore, which is built on Fedora Core OS. UCore is a small lightweight operating system that already has drivers and utilities built in that are ideal for a NAS. You'll likely start hearing the words batteries included associated with UCore when you're on the internet or watching videos. And really the big takeaway here of what that means is those are additional add-ons like Boot C, ZFS, WireGuard, Tail Scale, things like Nvidia Plus CUDA support, as well as some additional items like NFS and SMB, and there are additional packages as well, but those are the big takeaways. Of course, the real takeaway here is that UCore is a container first operating system. And you'll use Boot C to boot that container as a regular operating system so that way it can still be lightweight and be deployed to your bare metal hardware, and it will still be updatable as well as easy to

roll back in case something goes wrong, because it is essentially a container. If you'd like to hop on this bandwagon, there is of course the option to sign up for the Unraid 8 beta wait list. Unraid 7.4 Beta 1 Highlights

SPEAKER_00 2:55

8. Unraid 7.4.0 beta 1 is currently available for testing. This beta brings a shared task tray for background operations, which will allow operations from plugins, Docker, and virtual machines to be queued and managed from a shared task tray. Docker container templates now support multiple custom networks, and additional network attachments are retained when a container is updated or recreated. Advanced view will now expose Docker memory limit for containers in the UI. A physical power button behavior is now configurable for shutdown, reboot, or to do nothing. The boot device page now supports downloading a flash backup directly to the server with a progress tracking bar available. There are also a couple fixes related to storage and a few fixes to the web UI, related specifically to the plugins page, the plugin update validation, and plugin manager cleanup. Additional firmware has been added for real tech wireless adapters, and of course a Linux kernel update, as well as several base distribution package updates, mainly focused on security fixes, and only one package has been downgraded. The shared MIME info was downgraded from 2.5.1 to 2.4-2.

New Team Hires And Merch Drop

SPEAKER_00 4:11

Back in June, two open roles were announced so anyone could join the Unraid team. Those positions were filled by Alex Kretschmar and Scott Schwartz. Alex is the head of product marketing, he has a long history with the community and even co-founded the insanely popular Linux server I.O. Group. Scott is now the head of operations and automation. He brings 20 years of experience helping companies build the structure to scale up. Some new merch has dropped. The new Unrate and Chill t-shirt is now available. And while you're there, be sure to also try and pick up other t-shirts because all t-shirts are currently on sale for just $20 each.
